    Poland to host United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24) in December 2018.

    24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change along with 14th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol will take place from 3-14 December 2018. It is estimated that 30.000 guests from 195 countries will participate. Poland is honoured to organise a large-scale and important international event again.

    Katowice – a host city

    COP24 will be held in Katowice – a city of spectacular change, where tradition meets modernity. The choice of Katowice as a host city of COP24 is not accidental. The sustainable transformation experienced in recent years by Katowice is an excellent illustration of developing the just transition concept - one of COP24 leading themes.

    Only 25 years ago the city was mainly associated with coal mining and heavy industry. Today Katowice is famous for its cultural zone whereas Upper Silesia and Dąbrowskie Metropolis are becoming a region of science, modern business and sustainable investments.

    COP24 will take place at International Congress Centre (ICC) – modern building combining a number of functions, it serves as a venue for congresses, conferences, exhibitions, trade shows and performances. It comprises 35 conference rooms where the largest one of 8.100 m2 has a capacity of 12,00 people. What is interesting, ICC is located in the place of the former Katowice coal mine. That is a clear illustration of the city’s recent transformation and fits in perfectly in the concept of the event.

    Priorities of COP24 Poland presidency

    It is the 4th time PL holds COP Presidency and 3rd time hosts the climate summit. The top priority for Polish COP24 Presidency is to finalize the Paris Agreement Work Programme and conclude a comprehensive set of implementing rules. An important element will also be the Talanoa Dialogue which will constitute the review of what has been done so far by particular countries in the area of climate protection.

    Polish presidency focuses its message on 3 themes:

    1. Technology – sustainable urban development, clean air or energy efficiency and development of climate-friendly modern solutions, such as electromobility;
    2. Human - solidary and just transition of industrial regions;
    3. Nature – achieving climate neutrality by absorbing CO2 by forests and land, or by water management.

    Key message for COP24 is “Changing together” -  If we want to halt the dangerous climate change, we must act all together now. Watch the video and see how we understand our role at COP24 and what we do to respond to global challenges.
